The official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso reported on the causes of the blackout that has left all of western Cuba in the dark since dawn this Wednesday.

According to a post on Facebook, around 5:00 am, a fault occurred in a transmission line connecting the Santa Cruz del Norte thermoelectric plant with Guiteras in Matanzas, which caused an overload in the parallel line and, as a direct consequence, the division of the electrical system.

According to the report, several generating units were taken out of service at the thermoelectric plants in Mariel, Santa Cruz del Norte, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes in Cienfuegos, and Felton in Holguín.

Alonso indicated that the last two are already in the startup process, while a technical team is working on the recovery.

He also assured that the restoration process will be "faster" since the system did not experience a total disconnection, and he confirmed that the energization of substations in the west has already begun, a necessary step to progressively restore the service.

The western region of the country is experiencing a general blackout that has left provinces from Pinar del Río to Cienfuegos without electricity.

A few hours ago, Alonso reported on social media that the Electric Union (UNE) was investigating the causes of that partial disconnection, for which the exact time of occurrence was not even specified.

The energy situation continues to be characterized by a persistent and severe generation deficit.

The energy crisis has reached levels that even the Government cannot conceal.

In mid-September, the country experienced its fifth national blackout in less than a year, a figure that highlights the deep structural fragility of the national electrical grid.

Days earlier, another massive failure had caused a widespread blackout in the east, disconnecting several provinces and causing impacts in the west, particularly following the trip of the 220 kV Nuevitas–Tunas line, which left the entire system from Las Tunas to Guantánamo out of sync.

While the population faces prolonged blackouts, recurring failures, and official explanations that change from day to day, the electrical crisis continues to worsen with no visible signs of a nearby solution.
