The political prisoner and conscience prisoner Yosvany Rosell García Caso continues to recover slowly at the Lucía Íñiguez Landín Clinical Surgical Hospital in Holguín, following a hunger strike that lasted for 40 days.
His wife, Mailín Rodríguez Sánchez, reported this Wednesday from Havana that the prisoner “is being sustained with IV fluids and medications to continue his recovery.” She added that García Caso “has experienced diarrhea, which is a result of how weak he is until his stomach regains its normal state,” and thanked those who have shown concern and support.
The woman stated that the doctors continue to hydrate him and monitor his blood sugar, which remains somewhat high "as can be normal after 40 days without food." She also affirmed that her husband sent "an anti-communist hug to everyone" and concluded her message with the phrase: "Down with the PCC, Homeland, Life, and Freedom".
The political prisoner had ended his hunger strike on December 1, after prison authorities agreed to transfer him to an isolation cell, one of his main demands. During the days when his decision became known, a Mambí vigil in Miami coincided with the moment he ended the protest, where exiles and activists prayed for his health and for the freedom of Cuban political prisoners.
García Caso, a blacksmith by trade and father of three, is serving a 15-year prison sentence for his involvement in the protests of July 11, 2021 (11J) in Holguín, one of the harshest penalties imposed on the demonstrators from those days.
During their strike, international organizations such as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Amnesty International, and the United States Embassy in Havana expressed their concern for their health condition and urged the Cuban regime to ensure adequate medical care.
Yosvany Rosell García Caso remains hospitalized under medical surveillance as he continues his recovery process, having overcome what specialists described as the most critical point of his condition.
