The leader of the Damas de Blanco movement, Berta Soler, demanded the immediate release of Yosvany Rosell García, a
In a post on Facebook, Soler warned that the Cuban dissident is in critical condition, "handcuffed, chained, with kidney failure, dizziness, and without a clear medical diagnosis," after more than a month without food in protest of his imprisonment.
"Saving Yosvany Rosell García is very important. The Ladies in White demand from the Cuban regime the freedom of Yosvany. We cannot allow this young father of three to be left to die like Boitel, Zapata, or Wilman Villar," wrote Soler.
The activist directly held the Cuban authorities responsible for the health condition of the political prisoner and reported that he remains in custody without specialized medical care.
"It is in the hands of the repressors, waiting for him to die. We cannot allow another murder by this criminal communist dictatorship," he stated.
The Ladies in White insisted that García is innocent and that his only demand is freedom.
“He is claiming something very just, his freedom, because he is innocent. We want justice, immediate freedom, and specialized medical treatment,” Soler added.
The opposition movement recalled the cases of Pedro Luis Boitel, Orlando Zapata Tamayo, and Wilman Villar Mendoza, who died after hunger strikes in prison over the past few decades, and warned that history must not be allowed to repeat itself.
For her part, Mailin Sanchez, the wife of Yosvany Rosell García, posted a message on Facebook this Sunday, confirming that her husband has been on hunger strike for 39 days and that his condition remains very critical.
According to the explanation given, the latest medical report indicates that he spent the night without improvement, "with low blood pressure, which is very dangerous in his condition, as the day before he only agreed to have his blood pressure taken during the visit."
The woman added that the political prisoner “continues to drink water” and that his urine “remains concerning, even though it has cleared up a bit, it is not normal.”
With evident anguish, he concluded his message with a plea: “My God, it has been 39 days. Protect him, deliver him from all harm. Put your miraculous hands upon this father. He is in life-threatening danger.”
The case of Yosvany Rosell García has generated increasing concern among human rights activists both inside and outside the island, who hold the Cuban government responsible for any fatal outcome resulting from his hunger strike and demand an immediate response.
