An immigration judge in the United States ordered the release on bail of a Brazilian woman with family connections to White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, while she faces a deportation process.
According to the Associated Press, Bruna Ferreira, a 33-year-old resident of Massachusetts for several years, was detained on November 12 by agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while driving to New Hampshire to pick up her 11-year-old son.
Ferreira was engaged to Leavitt's brother, Michael, and they have a child together.
After being transferred to a detention center in Louisiana, a judge determined that Ferreira could be released on a bond of $1,500.
Her attorney, Todd Pomerleau, explained that the government did not oppose the request, acknowledging that the defendant did not pose a danger or flight risk.
However, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security described Ferreira as an “illegal immigrant with a criminal record” and stated that she had been arrested for assault, a charge that her attorney denied.
According to the authority, the woman must periodically report to ICE to fulfill the conditions of her release.
The lawyer indicated that his client arrived in the United States as a child and later enrolled in the DACA program, initiated during the Barack Obama administration, which protects young immigrants brought here by their parents from deportation.
Ferreira was in the process of applying for permanent residency when she was arrested.
Karoline Leavitt, originally from New Hampshire, was the spokesperson for Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign and currently holds the position of White House press secretary.
