A shooting prompted the closure and emergency alert at the Brown University campus in Providence, Rhode Island, this Saturday, after university authorities warned of gunfire near the Barus & Holley Engineering building and urged the community to take shelter, lock doors, and remain hidden.

The initial alert from the University, sent around 4:22 p.m., stated: “active shooter near Barus & Holley Engineering,” with instructions to run, hide, or fight as a last resort, as well as to silence phones and remain sheltered “until further notice.”

Later, another message requested that refugees continue to stay away from the area, while noting that there were no suspects in custody and that the police were still searching for the person or persons responsible.

A source, a student at Brown University, told our newsroom that the shooter was on the move and had fired in another street.

According to The Brown Daily Herald, citing a radio broadcast from Providence Fire, there were reported at least 20 victims injured near Barus & Holley and Macmillan Hall during the incident.

The student media also indicated that videos obtained by their newsroom show a strong police presence and emergency vehicles on nearby streets, as well as scenes of assistance to people on the ground near the Science Library.

Testimonials collected by the student newspaper describe moments of panic: a student reported hearing gunshots around 4:10 p.m., evacuated a building leaving her belongings behind, and ran to her residence to seek safety.

So far, the university has requested to avoid the specific area of the incident, remain sheltered, and stay alert for security updates while coordinating the response with multiple agencies and addressing medical emergencies on-site.
