The conservative commentator Tucker Carlson suggested that President Donald Trump could take advantage of a speech this Wednesday night to announce a significant escalation.

In his intervention on the podcast Judging Freedom this Wednesday, Carlson stated that lawmakers had been informed about the possibility of a war against Venezuela.

"What I know so far is that members of Congress were informed yesterday that a war is looming and that this could be announced in the national address that the president will deliver tonight at 9 PM," Carlson said.

However, he added: "Who knows if that will actually happen. I don’t know. And I never want to overstate what I know, which is generally quite limited. But a member of Congress told me that this morning."

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Tuesday a  total oil blockade against Venezuela and a tightening of deportations, in a message posted on his social media platform Truth Social, where he directly accused Nicolás Maduro's regime of funding criminal activities with energy resources.

“Today, I am ordering a total and complete blockade of all authorized tankers entering and leaving Venezuela,” Trump stated, asserting that Venezuelan oil was being used to finance “narcoterrorism, human trafficking, murder, and kidnapping.”

In his statement, Trump asserted that Venezuela is "completely surrounded" by military forces and warned that the pressure will increase until the country returns to the United States "all the oil, land, and other assets" that, he claimed, were previously stolen.

The leader reiterated his designation of Maduro's government as an "illegitimate regime" and labeled it as a foreign terrorist organization.

Since September, the United States has carried out dozens of bombings against ships allegedly linked to drug trafficking as part of the “Southern Spear” operation.

Experts and human rights organizations have reported that the attacks constitute "extrajudicial executions."

The Trump administration has described Maduro as the leader of the "Cartel de los Soles", a drug trafficking organization that chavismo denies.

The agency Reuters has suggested that the CIA has intensified its covert operations in Venezuela to “prepare options for political transition,” including the potential overthrow of Maduro through secret actions.
