The President of the United States, Donald Trump, presented a new national initiative this Thursday: the "Patriot Games," a sports competition among youth from all states of the country that will be part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026.
The event, scheduled for next fall, will take place over four days and will feature "the best high school athletes," one young man and one young woman from each state and territory, as explained by the leader in a video shared on his social media.
Trump described the event as "an unprecedented athletic event" and announced that it will be broadcast and supervised by the Secretary of Health, Robert F. Kennedy.
However, the announcement was not without controversy. In his message, the president reiterated his stance against the participation of transgender individuals in women’s competitions: “I guarantee you that there will be no men in women's sports,” he stated.
His statements provoked a wave of criticism from the Democratic opposition, which compared the "Patriot Games" to the film series "The Hunger Games," where an authoritarian regime forces young people to compete against each other for survival.
The official account of the Democratic Party on X (formerly Twitter) posted a clip from the movie, recalling the scene in which the districts of Panem offer a young man and a young woman as tribute to fight to the death.
The president also took the opportunity in his message to reiterate another of his symbolic projects: the construction of an Arc de Triomphe in Washington D.C. “We are the only major country without an Arc de Triomphe. We will have a beautiful one, just like the one in Paris,” Trump stated.
With this proposal, the president seeks to strengthen national pride and his image of leadership in anticipation of the founding anniversary of the United States.
