A Cuban mother residing in Miami experienced moments of anguish and despair after her son was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents while attending a scheduled immigration appointment in that city in South Florida.
According to witnesses, the young man, whose identity has not been disclosed, voluntarily appeared at the ICE offices to complete a routine immigration control procedure.
However, the officials stopped him upon finding that he had a pending deportation order.
In a video shared on social media by La Familia Cubana, a mother is seen crying uncontrollably in front of the building, pleading for them not to take him away.
The arrest has sparked outrage in the Cuban community in Miami, where several activists have reported the practice of detaining migrants who voluntarily attend their appointments with the authorities.
The young man remains in ICE custody.
In recent months, there has been an increase in similar detentions in Florida, particularly of Cuban migrants who are facing challenges in obtaining asylum or residency permits due to changes in federal immigration policies.
Human rights organizations have urged U.S. authorities to review these procedures, claiming that they cause a deep emotional impact on families and undermine the trust of migrants who voluntarily present themselves to ICE.
