An overwhelming majority of Americans support the deportation of immigrants who are in the country illegally and have committed crimes, according to the latest survey by the Harvard CAPS / Harris Poll, a monthly collaboration between the Harvard Center for American Political Studies (CAPS) and Harris Poll along with HarrisX.
Eighty percent of respondents expressed their support for the deportation of undocumented immigrants who have broken the law, while only twenty percent opposed it. Support was particularly strong among Republican voters (91%), but it also received broad approval among independents (79%) and Democrats (69%), indicating that the issue of immigration generates cross-party consensus.
The study also shows that 70% of participants support strengthening border security and implementing policies that deter illegal crossings, while 56% are in favor of using the U.S. military to prevent illegal immigration.
These figures position immigration policies among the most supported by the population, along with other popular measures such as lowering the prices of prescription medications (86%) and reducing wasteful public spending (77%).
In contrast, the proposals with the least acceptance were imposing work requirements on Medicaid beneficiaries (43%) and using the National Guard to patrol cities (51%), suggesting less support for measures perceived as interventionist within the country.
The Harvard CAPS / Harris Poll serves as a political barometer of American public opinion on issues of economy, immigration, health, and national security.
