Ferrer to Díaz-Canel: "Move quickly, release the political prisoners, and let the people take control of their destiny."

"A enslaved people wishes for someone to save them, and if it is the United States that does it, the vast majority of Cubans will be grateful. Talk and do so quickly; be smart and strive to be honest," the opposition leader told the appointed ruler.

The Cuban opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer delivered a strong message this Sunday to the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel and the regime's leadership, warning them to "act quickly" and release all political prisoners before it is too late.

In a post on his X account (formerly Twitter), Ferrer urged the regime to allow the people to "take control of their destiny" and warned that if repression continues, the leaders of the Communist Party will be responsible for what happens.

Recently, Ferrer had also published an open letter addressed to the commanders and troops of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) and the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), urging them to promote political change in the country and to cease serving as "instruments of repression."

In the text, the opposition leader warned that Cuba is experiencing "the worst crisis in seven decades," characterized by economic collapse, shortages of food and medicine, an energy crisis, and a massive exodus.

In that regard, Ferrer urged the military to "be protagonists of a democratic transition" and to support the holding of free elections, political pluralism, and the drafting of a new Constitution "with everyone and for the good of all."

“Converse quickly and be smart; make an effort to be honest, which is very difficult for you, I would say impossible. Move quickly, free all political prisoners, and let the people take control of their destiny,” insisted this Monday the leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), currently exiled in the United States.

Ferrer also warned that if the oppression continues, “a enslaved people will long for someone to save them,” and that “if it is the United States that does it, the vast majority of Cubans will be grateful.”

The activist, released in 2025 after spending almost four years in prison, reminded the regime of the downfalls of dictators such as Noriega, Gadafi, Milosevic, Hussein, and Nicolás Maduro, stating that Castroism could meet the same fate if it does not change its course.

"You are very oppressive towards the unarmed people, but far too cowardly to face the United States," Ferrer pointed out in a tone unusually direct, even for his usual style.

The message comes just a day after the U.S. president Donald Trump advised the Cuban regime to “make a deal before it's too late,” amid the complete cutoff of oil supplies from Venezuela.

Ferrer’s statements strengthen the political and moral pressure on the regime in Havana at a time of increasing international isolation, economic collapse, and social deterioration within the country.
