A Cuban citizen wanted by U.S. authorities for drug-related offenses was captured this week in Honduras during a police operation led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DPI).
The detainee, identified as Jorge Marcelo Manso Gonzales, was arrested in the city of San Pedro Sula, in the northern part of the country, and is being sought for extradition by a court in the state of Florida.

The arrest was carried out by the Police Directorate of Investigations (DPI) in coordination with the Unit for Crimes Against Life, following an intelligence operation that led to the location of the suspect in the Universidad neighborhood of San Pedro Sula.
According to the authorities, Manso Gonzales had been residing in that area for at least three years, although news reports indicate that his presence in Honduras extended for a longer period.
"Intelligence information was received, localization was carried out, surveillance was conducted, and once the identity was confirmed, action was taken to apprehend him," explained Subcommissioner César Ruiz, spokesperson for the DPI.
Wanted by courts in Miami since 2009
The case of Manso Gonzales dates back to December 2008, a time when U.S. authorities linked him to drug trafficking activities.
The arrest warrant was issued by a Miami-Dade circuit court on February 18, 2009, indicating that the Cuban has been a fugitive from justice for over 15 years.
During that period, he apparently managed to establish himself discreetly in Honduras until he was finally captured due to the monitoring by investigative bodies from the Central American country.
Following his arrest, Manso Gonzales was transferred to the DPI facilities in San Pedro Sula, where he remains in custody while the necessary legal procedures for his extradition to the United States are underway.
“At this moment, arrangements are being made with authorities from the government and state of the United States to send it to the court that issued this order,” added Deputy Commissioner Ruiz.
Regional cooperation against drug trafficking
The capture of the Cuban citizen has been presented by Honduran authorities as a new example of the country's commitment to the fight against organized crime and transnational drug trafficking.
In recent years, Honduras has intensified its cooperation with the United States regarding extradition, particularly in cases related to drug trafficking.
According to official reports, the detainee will be transferred in the coming hours to Tegucigalpa, the capital of the country, to continue with the judicial procedures before the Supreme Court of Justice, the body responsible for handling extradition requests in accordance with the current international treaties.
A history yet to be clarified
Although authorities have not disclosed details about the organization or criminal network linked to Jorge Marcelo Manso Gonzales, the fact that the arrest warrant comes from a court in Miami and has been active for over a decade suggests that the case may be related to substantial-scale drug trafficking operations.
Until now, there has been no information regarding whether Manso Gonzales had a criminal record in Cuba or what his migration route was before settling in Honduras.
It is also unknown whether there are other individuals involved in the case or if the Cuban acted alone.
The extradition of Manso Gonzales could shed more light on his role within a criminal organization and his connections to international drug trafficking operations, particularly involving cocaine.
