A Cuban citizen identified as a key player in an international criminal network with links to the United States and Mexico was arrested last Wednesday in Cancun.

The arrest took place on Huayacán Avenue, one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the municipality of Benito Juárez, and was carried out by a joint operation of state and federal forces, according to the Quintana Roo Secretary of Citizen Security.

According to reports from local media, the detainee was identified as Remigio “N”, a Cuban national, considered a priority target within the crime atlas of Quintana Roo.

Authorities link him to a Cuban-American criminal cell involved in the trafficking of undocumented individuals and directly connected to a branch of the Sinaloa cartel, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Mexico.

The arrest occurred during surveillance patrols when agents from the Centurion Group detected the man handling several bags of drugs. The seemingly minor scene uncovered a much more serious history.

Drugs, a firearm exclusively for military use, high-caliber ammunition, as well as cash and a mobile phone were found in their possession, according to official sources quoted by local media.

But the case goes beyond Cancun. Remigio “N” had a criminal record for robbery in the state of Florida and was being monitored by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), which underscores the international dimension of the network to which he allegedly belongs, as detailed by NotiCaribe and 24 Horas Quintana Roo.

The detainee was placed at the disposal of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for the Fight Against Drug Dealing, which will determine his legal situation in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the case is shaking both Cancún and the Cuban community, once again exposing the darkest side of the criminal networks that operate between the Caribbean, Mexico, and the United States, taking advantage of the migration chaos and the lack of opportunities that drives thousands of Cubans to leave their country.
