The Miami-Dade County Commissioner, Natalie Milian Orbis, responded firmly this Monday to a message posted on X by the Cuban regime's chancellor, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, whom she accused of representing a dictatorship that oppresses its own people and attempting to delegitimize the stance of the Cuban exile community in the United States.
“Bruno, basta de cuentos. Tú hablas por una dictadura comunista que asesina, encarcela y roba a su propio pueblo mientras vive del dinero extranjero. Nosotros hablamos por una comunidad de exiliados que quiere una Cuba libre”, escribió la funcionaria.
"We are not going to allow you or anyone to stop, intimidate, or hold us back. The time for a free Cuba is now," he added.
Milian Orbis's response came after Rodríguez Parrilla accused politicians in Florida of “obstructing and threatening” American and Cuban entrepreneurs residing in that state who maintain business relations with Cuba under licenses granted by OFAC and the Department of the Treasury. In his message, the chancellor sought to hold those sectors accountable for upholding what he termed a “backward and criminal policy” against the Cuban people.
Unanimous resolution against licenses to Cuba
The commissioner went beyond the confrontation on social media and recalled that Miami-Dade County unanimously approved a resolution urging the federal government to suspend all licenses and authorizations related to Cuba until complete audits are conducted and accountability is ensured.
"None of the U.S. authorizations should be enriching a communist dictatorship ninety miles from our shores, which harbors terrorists and undermines our national security," he emphasized.
In that same context, on January 26, Milian Orbis sent a formal letter to President Donald Trump requesting the immediate suspension of all federal licenses related to Cuba, with the aim of preventing the communist regime from benefiting from funds, services, or facilities coming from the United States.
"Miami-Dade County unanimously voted to urge President Trump to suspend all federal licenses related to Cuba until there are complete audits and transparency," said the commissioner while accompanying the official statement from the Board of Commissioners.
Direct clash with Havana
El intercambio marca un nuevo capítulo en la confrontación política entre autoridades locales del sur de Florida y el régimen cubano, en momentos en que se intensifica el debate sobre las licencias comerciales, las exportaciones y el impacto real de estas operaciones en la población cubana.
While Havana insists on portraying these economic relations as beneficial for the people, leaders of the exile community and local officials argue that they ultimately reinforce a repressive system financially, without improving the living conditions of citizens on the Island.
