The Cuban State Security detained independent journalist Henry Constantin and collaborator Alejandra García, both members of the outlet La Hora de Cuba, as reported by the publication itself on social media.

According to the report from the media, around 12:40 p.m. García alerted the editorial team that several State Security agents were outside the house where she was in Havana. Minutes later, she sent a final message informing that both she and Constantin were being detained.

Since that moment, La Hora de Cuba has been unable to establish communication with either of the two journalists or obtain official information about their whereabouts or the reasons for their detention. This incident marks another episode of arbitrary arrest and temporary disappearance, which are common practices of the Cuban regime against independent press.

Constant harassment against independent journalists

The arrest of Constantin comes after a series of harassment acts against him since the beginning of 2026. On January 14, the director of La Hora de Cuba was arrested in the capital and remained missing for over 40 hours, without a court order or communication with his family. Days later, he was again intercepted by police agents in Camagüey, in a new attempt at intimidation directly related to his journalistic work.

Journalist Alejandra García, a contributor to the outlet, has also faced pressures and summons in the past for her work in defense of freedom of expression.

The Hour of Cuba held the Cuban state responsible for the physical and psychological integrity of both communicators, and demanded their and without charges.

The organization emphasized that these arrests confirm the repressive escalation of Miguel Díaz-Canel's regime against independent journalists and communicators, in a context of increasing criminalization of press freedom on the island.
