A brutal family tragedy shocked this Monday a peaceful neighborhood in the city of Greenacres, in south Florida, where a man of Cuban descent allegedly shot and killed his partner and her daughter, also Cubans, before taking his own life in the residential complex where they lived.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) identified the victims on Tuesday as Milvia Quintana Placeres, 59, and Brianna Rodríguez Quintana, 25, and the suspect in the double fatal shooting as Juan Estévez Mesa, 60, reported local media.
The three lived in an apartment at the Pine Ridge North 1 condominium on Shady Pine Way, where the shootout occurred, authorities revealed.
According to the official report, the police received a call about gunfire at around 7 a.m. on Monday, in the 500 block of Pine Way. Officers who responded to the scene found a woman dead and another with gunshot wounds.
The paramedics rushed the injured woman to a local hospital, where she later died due to the severity of her injuries.
According to authorities, after the shooting, Estévez took refuge in his home, where officers attempted to make contact with him. As he did not respond to orders to come out, the PBSO SWAT team secured the area and entered the property, where they found the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Ello confirmed that it was a case of double murder followed by suicide, in an alleged incident of domestic violence, according to a report from CBS.
Although the police confirmed that the victims and their attacker knew each other, they did not specify the relationship between them. Close acquaintances revealed on social media that Quintana and Estévez were in a romantic relationship, and they were all from Camagüey.
The investigation into the case remains open. Authorities are gathering information to clarify the circumstances that led to the violent incident, which has left residents of the quiet neighborhood of Greenacres in shock.
The dramatic event has shocked family members, friends, and members of the Cuban community in South Florida and on the island.
