An extremely grave incident shocked the rural town of Sevilla on Tuesday, located about five kilometers from the city of Santiago de Cuba, where the body of a man was found in the pit (latrine) of his home.
The victim was identified as Rosendo López, 40 years old, a resident of the hill of Sevilla.
Según revelaron al comunicador Yosmany Mayeta vecinos y familiares, llevaba varios días desaparecido.
The concern grew as there were no news from him, prompting some residents to go to his house. Upon entering, they found bloodstains, which raised alarms about the possible occurrence of a violent incident.
Finally, the body was located inside the rustic toilet.
The situation worsened when, despite the discovery, the body remained at the scene for hours due to a lack of transportation and staff from the Forensic Medicine department, which caused outrage and distress among the local residents.
According to information gathered from local sources, there were no signs of theft or missing items in the property, leading to a preliminary conclusion that a common criminal act can be ruled out.
The initial lines of investigation point to a problem of coexistence, as relatives claim that there were disputes between Rosendo and his brother, identified by neighbors and acquaintances as Rubén.
It is also claimed that the victim exhibited unstable behavior.
Several people stated that when questioned about the disappearance, the brother allegedly said that Rosendo went out to "fix his phone." However, his phone rang without being answered, which strengthened suspicions that something bad had happened.
After the body was discovered, it was confirmed that the brother was detained and remains under investigation, although no charges have been filed against him so far.
After several hours of waiting, the body was finally taken by the Medical Examiner's office.
The violence that continues to grow in Cuba
Events like this reflect the concerning rise of violence in Cuba, where cases of homicides, assaults, and conflicts that end in tragedy are becoming increasingly frequent.
Insecurity, social deterioration, and the lack of effective responses have created a situation where human life seems to be worth less and less.
The normalization of horror, impunity, and official silence regarding many of these events only contributes to the perpetuation of violence.
Cuban society deserves to live without fear, with institutions that prevent, investigate, and sanction transparently, and with a State that prioritizes the real protection of its citizens.
