The head of mission at the United States Embassy in Cuba, Mike Hammer, published a video of his meeting with the priest José Conrado Rodríguez in the city of Trinidad, in the province of Sancti Spíritus.
“I had the pleasure of meeting with Father Conrado again in Trinidad. He inspires me every time I talk to him,” wrote Hammer on the official embassy account.
The diplomat recounted that, upon leaving the parish that day, a small group of individuals supportive of the Cuban regime insulted him.
“Some communists, surely frustrated by how poorly the revolution is going, shouted obscenities at me; but aren't they the ones who always insist on respect?” commented Hammer.
It referred to a repudiation act that took place on Saturday in Trinidad, but the regime organized a second repudiation act that same night when the diplomat arrived in Camagüey.
Father Conrado, priest of the Church of San Francisco de Paula in Trinidad, is known for his critical stance against the government of Miguel Díaz-Canel and for his defense of human rights and freedom of conscience in Cuba.
Hammer noted that the priest inspires him "every time he talks to him," in a message that generated widespread reaction on social media.
