The Republican congressman Mario Díaz-Balart warned on Wednesday that anyone or any regime that threatens U.S. officials, whether in Cuba, Venezuela, or other countries, will face consequences.
“Anyone who threatens U.S. officials in Venezuela, Cuba, or elsewhere will face consequences. The United States will not appease or allow impunity for the bullies who endanger American lives,” wrote Díaz-Balart on the social media platform X.
The statement comes amid a new episode of diplomatic tension between Washington and Havana, following the fact that the U.S. ambassador to Cuba, Mike Hammer, was the target of a series of repudiation acts organized by regime structures in less than 24 hours.
Escalation following acts of repudiation against Mike Hammer
According to recent reports, the intimidation attacks occurred during the diplomat's visits to several provinces in the center of the island, where government-affiliated groups carried out hostile actions against him.
In light of these events, the United States government demanded that the Cuban regime immediately stop this type of aggression against its diplomatic personnel.
“The illegitimate Cuban regime must immediately cease its repressive acts of sending individuals to interfere with the diplomatic work of Chargé d'Affaires Hammer and the members of the Embassy team,” noted on X the Office of Western Hemisphere Affairs.
The institution also emphasized that U.S. diplomats will continue to meet with the Cuban people "despite the regime's failed intimidation tactics."
