Cuban customs authorities reported this weekend the arrest of a passenger at the José Martí International Airport in Havana, who was attempting to illegally smuggle 28 birds concealed in tubes attached to their body.
The fact was confirmed by William Pérez González, the first deputy chief of the General Customs of the Republic, who reported the attempted trafficking in a post on the social network X.
“Frustrated at Havana Airport the illegal extraction from the country of 28 birds hidden in tubes attached to a passenger's body. Administrative measures were applied and the police were notified,” wrote the official.
Pérez González added that the protection of flora and fauna is a priority for the Cuban authorities, under the official motto of "Safe Border."
So far, no details have been provided regarding the identity of the passenger, the intended destination, or the type of birds being transported, although the case has raised concerns about the conditions in which the animals were being moved.
Illegal trafficking of species is a recurring problem in Cuba and often involves attempts to smuggle animals out of the country for sale in clandestine markets abroad.
