A dead whale washed up in the last hours at the beach of Santa Lucía, in the Pinar del Río municipality of Minas de Matahambre, as reported by the local station Radio Guamá on its website.

According to the information released, specialists from the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (CITMA), along with other organizations, are on-site applying the established procedures for these cases and assessing the possible causes of the incident.

“At this time, specialists from CITMA and other organizations are applying the established procedures and evaluating what has occurred,” the report stated.

An unusual event in the area

The stranding of cetaceans in this region is not common. According to reports cited by the press, the most recent event occurred in 1989, when another cetacean beached in Boca de Galafre, south of Pinar del Río.

Authorities indicate that these episodes are often linked to natural factors. Among the most common causes are adverse weather conditions, which can lead whales to move into shallow waters and arrive at unfamiliar shores, causing disorientation and making it difficult for them to return to deeper areas.

Experts are investigating the causes

So far, the species of the animal and the specific reasons for its death have not been officially reported. A team from Radio Guama has traveled to Santa Lucía to provide additional details about the case in the coming hours.

The discovery has sparked curiosity among local residents and again highlights the importance of environmental protocols in response to these events, which require specialized management to protect both the population and the coastal ecosystem.
