The teenager Derek Rosa, who was sentenced in January for the murder of his mother in an apartment in Hialeah in 2023, was recently transferred to a prison in northern Florida, according to official documents from the state's Department of Corrections.

The information confirms that Rosa is no longer in the Metro West adult jail, in Miami-Dade County, where she was previously held, but is now at the Suwannee Correctional Institution, in the city of Live Oak, Suwannee County, in northern Florida.

It is a correctional facility for adults that includes a wing designated for minors.

According to official records - cited by the local press - it is noted that his custody status currently appears as "pending," which means he could be transferred again to another institution.

In the same documents, the estimated date of release is noted: October 5, 2048.

The prison record also includes a new image of the young man, in which he is shown with a shaved head, creating a contrast with earlier photographs released after his arrest.

A plea agreement weeks before the trial

The transfer occurs months after Rosa accepted a plea deal with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office just a few weeks before the start of her trial.

Upon pleading guilty to second-degree murder, the teenager -now 15 years old- faced a sentence of 25 years in prison followed by 20 years of parole.

The agreement also stipulates that, once the prison sentence has been completed, the individual must undergo mandatory psychological treatment, which will continue while they remain under supervised release.

During that probation period, the court ordered him not to have any contact with his stepfather, Frank Ramos, or with his younger sister, the baby who was in the apartment at the time of the crime.

The crime that shocked Hialeah

Derek Rosa was arrested in October 2023, when he was 13 years old, following the stabbing murder of his mother, Irina García, in the family apartment in Hialeah.

The teenager himself called 911 and told the operator that he had killed his mother.

Later, after being arrested by the Hialeah police and taken to the station, he confessed again during a recorded interrogation that he was the one who had stabbed her.

The case had a strong impact on the community of South Florida, both due to the age of the accused and the circumstances surrounding the crime.

With his recent transfer to a prison in the northern part of the state and a potential release date set for 2048, the judicial process now enters a new phase characterized by the enforcement of the agreed-upon sentence.
