A Cuban mother living in the United States had an emotional moment that has gone viral on TikTok, as she sent her son alone to Cuba to reunite with his grandmother after nearly three years apart.
According to the woman in the video, she and other family members cannot travel to the Island due to their I-220A immigration status, a form granted to certain Cuban migrants upon entering the United States, which currently leaves thousands in legal limbo, unable to regularize their status or leave the country without facing risks.
"I sent it as a surprise to my son after nearly three years without going to Cuba, since we can't go with him because we have I-220A," the mother explained in the video shared on the TikTok account @elregalosonadoholguin.
To keep the surprise, the woman told her family in Cuba that they needed to go to the airport to pick up a package she had sent from the United States. However, the supposed shipment turned out to be the child himself, who traveled alone to hug his grandmother again.
The images show the moment when the child arrives at the airport and, later, how he tries to surprise his grandmother dressed as a children's character. However, his size gave him away before he could complete the surprise.
The most touching moment occurs when the grandmother, visibly moved, realizes that the "gift" is her grandson. Amidst tears and smiles, they share a long embrace that has touched the hearts of thousands of users on social media.
The case brings back to the forefront the situation of Cubans with I-220A, who face immigration restrictions that prevent them from traveling outside the United States, even to visit their relatives on the Island.
Meanwhile, many families continue to seek alternatives to maintain emotional bonds despite the distance and legal limitations.
