The US dollar (USD) opened this Saturday at 510 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market. It is two pesos more than the previous day, confirming a new increase amid the ongoing shortage of foreign currency.
The North American currency continues to be the most sought after by Cubans for purchasing food, medicine, and basic products in dollar stores or for emigrating. The pressure on the Cuban peso reflects a lack of confidence in the national economy and the deterioration of purchasing power.
The euro (EUR) is also on an upward trend, trading at 570 CUP. The European currency remains above the dollar, driven by demand from those receiving remittances from European Union countries or using it as a means of saving in response to domestic inflation.
On its part, the Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) is trading at 405 CUP. Although it has lost prominence compared to the dollar and the euro, it remains a key reference in informal transactions within the Island.
