The Cuban baseball player Andy Pagés explained the reasons why he will not be participating with the Cuban national team in the World Baseball Classic, despite acknowledging that he would have liked to represent his country.
In statements to journalist Luis Gilbert from Con Las Bases Llenas, the Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder indicated that the decision was driven by the need to prioritize his professional career and his preparation for the season.
"Yes, I obviously wanted to play, but there are priorities to consider. I was more certain about my decision because my family wanted to see me play for Cuba, but sometimes there are things that, even though we want to do them, we have to let go," he stated.
Pagés also explained that he comes from two demanding seasons and that next year is shaping up to be one of great competitive intensity as well, which is why he decided to focus on his health and performance.
"Yes, I want to be representing Cuba next, but for now, I am prioritizing my career. I've had two pretty long years, and possibly this one will be as well, so I prefer to focus on my health and my preparation for the season," he added.
The player left the door open to joining the Cuba team in future editions of the tournament, although for now he chose to focus on his development within professional baseball.
