The government of Brazil announced that it will send humanitarian aid to Cuba in the form of food and supplies for agricultural production, amid the crisis facing the island.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture, Paulo Teixeira, during the 39th Session of the Regional Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for Latin America and the Caribbean, which began this Monday in Brasília.

According to the official's explanation to the press, the assistance will be channeled through the Brazilian Agency for Cooperation and is part of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.

"We are going to authorize a resource so that they can acquire supplies for food production here in Brazil. We will also send food to help them cope with the dramatic situation they are facing. This should take place starting this week, and those agreements should be signed," stated Teixeira.

The minister indicated that the aid will also be allocated to Haiti within the same cooperation program.

The decision comes weeks after the Brazilian government assessed the shipment of humanitarian aid to Cuba focused on medication and basic supplies, an initiative that would be coordinated by the Brazilian Agency for Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In recent years, Brazil has sent various types of donations to the island, including medications, sanitary supplies, vaccines, water purification equipment, and dehydrated food following the passage of Hurricane Melissa in 2025.

The statements made by the Brazilian minister took place during the 39th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, which is being held in Brasília until March 6 and brings together representatives from governments in the region to discuss food security policies.

During his speech at the event, Teixeira also advocated for the inclusion of the topic of agrarian reform in the conference debate agenda.

"On behalf of the Brazilian government, I would like to support the proposal made by Colombia to include the issue of agrarian reform on the agenda for this week's debates," he stated.

The minister added that one of the central objectives of the meeting is to strengthen policies to increase food production and access in the region.

"Our main focus is to increase food sovereignty, boost production and access to those foods, transition towards healthier eating, and also tackle climate change in Latin America, which severely impacts food production," he concluded.
