Cuban filmmaker Ian Padrón publicly invited actor and director Jorge Perugorría to engage in a debate about the causes of the crisis that Cuba is experiencing, after the latter attributed the worsening situation in the country to the government of President Donald Trump.

Padrón's invitation comes after statements made by Perugorría at the Málaga Film Festival. If these conversations were to take place, they would open a new chapter in the debate among Cuban cultural figures regarding the origins of the crisis in Cuba and the visions for the future held by intellectuals and artists for the country.

Ian Padrón confronts "Pichi" and makes him a proposal

In a Facebook post, Padrón addressed Perugorría directly to question his statements and propose a public exchange of ideas.

"Hello Pichi, I believe you know of my respect for you, your work, and your family for many years. From that perspective, I am writing you this public note," he began to say, before expressing his disagreement with the actor's words.

“It angers me—at least me—to read your statements blaming the President of the United States as the cause of the severe situation in Cuba. (...) I think very differently; I believe that the ‘crisis’ is systemic. Living under a dictatorship where leaders are appointed arbitrarily, dissent is repressed, all media is controlled, political prisoners are jailed, and where defending power is prioritized over food, electricity, medicine, and ultimately, the freedom and prosperity of ordinary Cubans,” he added.

However, Ian Padrón's message does not slam the door on the filmmaker; on the contrary, it opens a space for dialogue and extends an invitation that could be beneficial for Cubans.

"I invite you to my space DERECHO@REPLICA if you think it would be a good idea to discuss this. Regards, Ian," he wrote.

The statements of Jorge Perugorría in Málaga

Jorge Perugorría, during the Málaga Film Festival, presented his film Anonymous Neurotic, co-directed with Cuban actress Mirtha Ibarra.

At a press conference, the actor stated that the decision by Donald Trump's government to "strangle" Cuba is leading the country "to the brink of a humanitarian crisis."

"We are in the worst moment in the history of our country," the artist stated, referring to the economic and social situation facing the island. He also explained how this scenario directly impacts film production.

"I was about to start filming a movie last week, and we had to stop because there is no fuel, and what little there is must be prioritized for essential needs, such as hospitals," he noted.

The importance of dialogue among Cubans regarding the future of Cuba

The clash of positions between Padrón and Perugorría reflects an increasingly visible discussion among Cubans both on the island and abroad regarding the causes of the national crisis and possible solutions.

In a moment marked by political tensions on a global scale and by the pressure from the United States on the Cuban regime, visions of the country's future are diverse. Many Cubans are entrenched in their ideological positions and lose sight of the real issues facing the country.

Some attribute the economic deterioration to U.S. sanctions, while others point to the structural failures of the Cuban political and economic system. In that context, the call for an open debate among influential figures in culture becomes highly relevant.

Ian Padrón's public invitation aims precisely to foster that space for dialogue, without the regime intervening with its discourse and censorship strategies. An open conversation, on social media, grounded in mutual respect and among Cubans living both on and off the island.

In a context where Cuba's immediate future generates uncertainty, the exchange between Cubans with different ideological stances can be crucial for imagining and building a national project that encompasses multiple visions regarding the direction the country should take.
