Family of political prisoner denounces brutal beating in Camagüey prison: “He was beaten by six guards”

The family of the political prisoner Alexander Verdecia Rodríguez reported that he was the victim of a brutal beating at the hands of several guards in Kilo 8 prison, in the province of Camagüey.

According to his wife, Eliannis Villavicencio Jorge, the opponent was transferred to that prison on March 4, and upon arrival, he shouted slogans against the Cuban regime and in defense of human rights, after which he was beaten by six officers.

The woman stated that, after chanting those slogans, the political prisoner was beaten by six guards of the prison. During the family visit that took place days later, they were able to see dark marks on several parts of his body.

According to the report, Verdecia also has a wound on his left leg that required four to five stitches, although he reportedly refused medical attention from the officials.

Villavicencio held the State Security and authorities from the Ministry of the Interior of the provinces of Granma and Camagüey responsible for the alleged aggression.

According to their testimony, officials from Citizen Services assured the family that prisoners in Cuba are not mistreated, while an officer identified by the nickname "Alejandro" allegedly denied that Verdecia was beaten.

The report adds to numerous accusations from human rights organizations that have documented abuses, beatings, and precarious conditions within Cuban prisons, particularly against political prisoners.
