Cuban activist Anamely Ramos González accused the regime of using the recent announcement of prisoner releases as a means of political pressure following several days of protests on the island.
Ramos reacted on social media to the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, which announced the upcoming release of 51 individuals sentenced to imprisonment.
"I think we are all old enough in this to know that when they say sovereign decision, it means blackmail," wrote the activist.
In his message, Ramos directly linked the announcement to the context of the protests that have taken place in the country in recent days.
"This blackmail is what they need after six days of protest. Control through blackmail," he stated, accompanying his post with the hashtags "#FreedomNow" and "#Everyone."
The Cuban regime announced that the release will take place in the coming days and assured that those benefitting have served a significant portion of their sentences and have maintained good conduct during their time in prison.
The decision was presented by the authorities as part of the exchanges held with the Vatican and in coincidence with the approach of the religious celebrations of Holy Week, although the statement did not specify the names of the inmates nor clarified whether there are political prisoners among them.
About this announcement, Cuban-American Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar reacted strongly to the announcement from the Cuban regime and demanded the immediate release of all political prisoners on the island.
