The U.S. dollar (USD) is quoted this Friday at 510 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal currency market in Cuba, according to the daily monitoring of the exchange rate.
The US dollar continues to be the primary reference for many transactions in the island's informal economy. The persistent devaluation of the Cuban peso and the high demand for foreign currency to purchase food, medicines, and other basic goods keep the dollar among the most sought-after currencies by the population.
The euro (EUR) is selling today at 575 CUP, which is three pesos lower compared to its value on Thursday, but it remains above the dollar in the Cuban black market. The European currency usually commands a higher price due to its lower availability on the island and the strong demand for foreign exchange for travel, informal imports, and savings.
The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) is trading at 410 CUP in the informal market. Its price increased by 18 pesos compared to the previous day.
Exchange Rate Evolution
This Friday, statements are expected from Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel early in the morning. Some people believe he may announce political changes that could lead to economic openings for Cuba, while others think he will not reveal anything new.
