Cubans in Murcia demonstrated this Saturday in the city center to demand freedom in Cuba, denounce the human rights situation on the island, and call for an end to the dictatorship.

Around 80 people participated in the gathering, which took place at six in the evening at La Glorieta, in front of the City Hall of Murcia, after the Cuban association of the Region of Murcia called for a demonstration against the Castro regime. Attendees, many dressed in white and carrying Cuban flags, displayed signs with messages such as “Freedom for political prisoners in Cuba,” “Down with the dictatorship,” and “Human rights for Cubans.”

After gathering in front of the city hall, the participants began a march through nearby streets in the city center, including Floridablanca Street, carrying banners and flags while chanting slogans in favor of freedom in Cuba. During the march, police officers managed traffic to allow the demonstration to proceed.

The organizers explained that the event was conceived as a gesture of solidarity with Cubans on the island. They stated, "It was a special day for Cuba, for our brothers who suffer day after day," and a moment that, in their view, "should be repeated over and over in every corner of the world where there is a Cuban."

They also emphasized that the mobilization aimed to bring attention to the situation of political prisoners and the crisis the country is facing. “We must not forget the more than 1,200 political prisoners,” they stated, while asserting that the demonstrators wanted to be “the voice of those who cannot scream and say enough is enough.”

The organizers also assured that the protest drew interest from passersby in the area. “People were watching us and applauding us with respect,” they commented. The demonstration, which had about 80 participants, experienced very emotional moments, such as when the authorities allowed the march to proceed: “It was thrilling when the police stopped traffic to let Cuba march down Floridablanca Street.”

The announcement, covered in the local press, called on attendees to wear white as a symbol of solidarity with the Cuban people. In the Region of Murcia, there is a community of about a thousand Cuban citizens.
