Residents from several neighborhoods in the city of Matanzas joined the pot-banging protests this Thursday, which have shaken various areas in the western part of the country over the past week, amidst growing discontent over the prolonged blackouts affecting different regions of Cuba.

The historian and activist Alina Bárbara López Hernández reported on social media that in her neighborhood, residents began to bang pots in protest after experiencing long hours without electricity.

“Drums are sounding in my neighborhood, I don't know if it's because of so many hours without power or in anticipation of tomorrow's appearance. Obviously, I joined them,” she wrote on Facebook.

Cacerolazos were also reported in the Naranjal neighborhood in the same city, where, according to testimonies shared on social media, residents took to the streets to protest by banging pots and pans.

El Naranjal is known as a neighborhood where many professionals associated with state institutions reside, which some observers interpret as a sign of growing social discontent.

Messages about protests in Matanzas

"Whoever does not understand that this is a symptom of desperation and a complete loss of fear has understood nothing," expressed one of the messages shared alongside the reports.

The protests in Matanzas are part of demonstrations that have taken place in recent days in various neighborhoods of Havana, where the sound of pots and pans and other forms of protest have been repeated amid the energy crisis.

The prolonged blackouts and the deterioration of basic services have led to increasing discontent among Cubans in various provinces of the country.
