Orlando Gutiérrez: "Cuba has more than enough talent to rebuild itself in freedom"

The coordinator of the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance, Orlando Gutiérrez Boronat, stated that the main resource for Cuba's national reconstruction is the talent of its citizens both on the island and abroad.

During a conversation with journalist Juan Manuel Cao, the activist highlighted the country's human potential as the foundation for future political change. In a video shared on social media X, he stated that “Cuba has plenty of talent to rebuild itself in freedom”.

"The number of talented and brilliant people both inside and outside of Cuba is the hope for reconstruction," he stated.

Gutiérrez stated that Cuba's human capital is the nation's greatest asset. “Cuba has a number of qualified, intelligent, creative, and responsible people, both inside and outside the country, and therein lies the great hope of the Cuban nation; that is Cuba's oil, the quality of its population,” he said.

According to his explanation, a significant portion of that talent remains within the country, albeit constrained by political and economic conditions. "Both inside Cuba, where they are stifled because they cannot exercise their talent, and outside of Cuba," he stated.

The activist also emphasized the impact that Cuban emigrants have had in various countries, especially in the United States. “Cubans, wherever they are, rise up and hold key positions,” he noted.

During the conversation, he also emphasized the coordination among opposition organizations that are promoting political change on the island.

"There is a united front in the opposition, the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance and Paso de Cambio, which are the two main coalitions. We have a liberation agreement, and we are working together," he stated.

In his opinion, this effort brings together both experienced figures in activism and a new generation of leaders. “It includes both people with extensive experience and a new generation that has emerged, featuring impressive leaders,” he said.

In that context, he believed that the current moment opens a new phase of expectations for the Cuban democratic cause. “Therefore, I think this is a moment of hope, because there is a Cuban democratic force fighting for change, and it has a series of political mechanisms and resources,” he stated.

Gutiérrez also mentioned the role of political initiatives driven from the United States in support of the Cuban democratic cause. "Like a Cuban Liberty Law, which with tremendous vision Lincoln-Díaz Balart and Ileana Ros were able to establish and consolidate for the future," he noted.

The statements come amid a time of intense political debate about the future of Cuba and its relationship with Washington. Following reports of contacts between Cuban and American officials to explore possible solutions to bilateral tensions, various sectors of the exile community have insisted that any rapprochement must be contingent on real political transformations on the island.

Representatives of the exile community in Miami have reiterated that the priority must be the restoration of democracy and the end of control by the Communist Party. They warn that without profound political changes, genuine collaboration with the Cuban government cannot exist, as members of the Cuban community in South Florida have recently expressed by rejecting dialogue without political reforms on the island and demanding that any engagement be conditioned on real changes.

In parallel, leaders of the exile community have warned that the Cuban government seeks to alleviate international pressures without implementing meaningful political transformations, a stance reiterated by the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance, which denounced that the regime is trying to buy time in the face of U.S. pressure without making political changes on the island. In this context, Gutiérrez argued that the talent and preparation of Cubans both inside and outside the country represent a key foundation for rebuilding the nation in a scenario of political change.
