Greg Bovino, head of the United States Border Patrol and one of the most prominent figures in the immigration policy of President Donald Trump, announced his retirement at the end of March after 30 years of service.

According to a report by New York Post, his departure comes after a period characterized by intense operations against irregular immigration in several cities across the country, as well as by recent controversies that led to his replacement in Minnesota.

Bovino led raids in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte, New Orleans, and Minneapolis, resulting in thousands of arrests, including gang members, murderers, and sexual abusers, according to authorities.

His departure comes after being removed from Minneapolis in January, amid the controversy surrounding the shooting of an anti-ICE protester, whom he described as a “domestic terrorist,” although later footage contradicted his account of the events.

The retirement also takes place in the context of changes within the immigration security apparatus, following the reassignment of Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, with whom Bovino had a close relationship.

During his tenure, Bovino was a familiar face in the immigration hardening strategy promoted by the Trump administration and frequently clashed with local authorities in sanctuary cities.

On social media, journalist Eric Daugherty noted that Bovino is concluding his career after leading large-scale deportation operations in Democratic jurisdictions and facing strong political criticism, expressing gratitude for his service and his active role on the ground.

After his departure, the administration sent Tom Homan to Minnesota to oversee immigration operations and contain the rise of protests in the area.

Bovino stated that the greatest honor of his life was working alongside Border Patrol agents in complex conditions both inside and outside the U.S. border.
