A strong operation by federal and local agencies paralyzed a neighborhood in Hialeah, in southern Florida, this Friday after a man barricaded himself for hours inside a house while being pursued by federal authorities who claim he had re-entered the U.S. illegally after being deported.

The emergency began around 11:00 AM at the 3100 block of West 68th Street, where dozens of agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and local police surrounded a house in an attempt to get the individual to surrender.

According to reports from local media, the operation lasted more than eight hours and extended into the night on Friday.

The operation included heavily armed tactical units, specialized vehicles, and negotiators who were trying to persuade the man from outside the residence.

Authorities confirmed that the objective of the operation was an individual who, according to their immigration history, had previously been deported and subsequently re-entered the United States illegally.

During the operation, the agents used loudspeakers to demand his surrender. Witnesses indicated that the officers were calling him by his name.

“Yam Perera,” the agents repeated over the loudspeaker, asking him to come out of the house and surrender, according to an initial report by Telemundo 51.

However, from inside the house, there was no response for much of the confrontation.

Destruction of the dwelling and use of tear gas

Images captured from helicopters by local media showed the moment when the tactical teams advanced toward the property.

Without hesitation, the agents smashed the front door, broke the security gate, and shattered the glass of the front window in an attempt to enter or force the man out.

In the absence of a response, the officers fired more than 20 canisters of tear gas into the house to force him out.

It was also observed how a crane was removing a vehicle from the parking lot of the house, which appeared to be a BMW Series 3.

Hours later, well into the night, reporters at the scene observed smoke coming from inside the house, prompting the intervention of firefighters from Hialeah, who inserted a hose into the home to manage the situation.

Until now, the authorities have not officially confirmed how the confrontation ended or what ultimately happened to the person who was barricaded.

Confusion about the identity of man

Although some reports indicated that the agents were calling out to "Yam Perera" over loudspeakers, Univision mentioned that authorities may have identified him as John Ferrera, which has raised questions about the individual's exact identity.

The federal agencies have also not publicly confirmed the name or provided details about the circumstances of the case.

The only thing they have noted is that it is "a federal matter," and that the Department of Homeland Security is in charge of the investigation.

Neighbors surprised by the operation

The massive police deployment caught the attention of local residents, who watched the operation from their homes for hours.

Some questioned the level of force used by the authorities.

"I believe that for an undocumented person, a miserable one, it's too much. I thought he was a mafia boss or a terrorist," expressed a neighbor identified as Miguel Arjona.

The resident added that, although he believes it is important for the law to be upheld, he does not agree with what he perceives as excesses.

"Alright, it's good to obey the law, but I do not agree with excesses," he stated.

Apparently empty house

Neighbors also told local media that the actual owners of the house were not in the city, as they were reportedly on vacation on a cruise at the time of the operation.

This has raised new questions about how the man ended up on the property.

The situation also had an impact on the nearby community. Hialeah Gardens High School, located approximately half a mile from the site of the operation, was temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.

The authorities have not reported whether there were any arrests, injuries, or formal charges related to the incident.

For now, the Department of Homeland Security is keeping the investigation open while awaiting official details about the suspect's identity, immigration history, and the outcome of the prolonged standoff.
