A bill in Florida that aimed to prohibit marriage between cousins did not advance in the state Senate, so these unions will remain legal.

According to a report by WFLA, the proposal, identified as HB-733, aimed to ensure that, starting July 1, 2026, marriages deemed incestuous would no longer be legally recognized in the state.

The text established restrictions to prevent marriages between close relatives, including relationships by direct consanguinity such as siblings, uncles, nephews, and other similar connections.

However, the initiative did not receive approval from the legislators, which prevents it from coming into effect and keeps the current legal framework in place.

Florida continues to be one of the states where marriage between first cousins is legal, unlike much of the United States, where such unions are prohibited.

The debate over this type of legislation has generated divided opinions amidst discussions about legal norms, traditions, and family regulations in the country.
