The Cuban boxing team secured 13 spots for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, following its performance in the qualifying tournament held in Guadalajara, Mexico.
According to the official site Cubadebate, the qualification was completed during the semifinal round, where the progress of Magda Massó (57 kg), the 2023 world runner-up Fernando Arzola (+90 kg), and Erlis Cobas (65 kg) stood out as they secured their tickets for the regional event.
Massó and Arzola not only secured their qualification, but they did so emphatically by winning via RSC (referee stops the contest) in their respective matches.
In total, the Cuban delegation achieved eight victories and just one defeat on Sunday, consolidating its dominance in the event and securing spots in multiple finals. Among them was Yunier Sorsano (70 kg), who had already secured his place in the gold medal match since the previous day.
Dominance in the male sector
Cuban boxers remained undefeated in the men's category, with outstanding performances from two-time Olympic champion Julio César La Cruz (90 kg) and Olympic champion Erislandy Álvarez (65 kg).
Also advancing were world runner-up Saidel Horta (60 kg), double world bronze medalist Alejandro Claro (55 kg), and Keylor García (80 kg).
Women's classification
In the women's sector, Cuba also ensured its presence in several divisions. Yailena Palomo (51 kg), Dayira Mesa (70 kg), and Yoana Rodríguez (75 kg) secured their spots despite losing their initial matches, benefiting from the number of competitors registered in their respective categories.
In this way, Cuba managed to qualify in all seven men's divisions and in six of the seven women's categories, missing only in the 60 kg category for women.
With these results, the team is well positioned to compete for multiple titles in the qualifier and confirms its prominence leading up to the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2026.
