Cuba remains in the dark following the total disconnection of the National Electric System (SEN) that occurred this Monday, while authorities acknowledge that they have not yet been able to determine what caused the system's collapse.

The General Director of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Lázaro Guerra Hernández, confirmed that the causes of the nationwide blackout are still unknown, according to information released by official media.

According to the official, no malfunctions were reported in the generating units that were operating when the system failure occurred, which increases the uncertainty regarding the source of the outage that left much of the country without electricity.

As the investigations continue, the energy authorities assure that they have already begun the efforts to gradually restore the service.

According to the latest report, Energás has managed to bring one of its units into operation, while efforts are underway to deliver electricity to the thermoelectric plant in Nuevitas, Camagüey, and to the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes power station in Cienfuegos, with the aim of supporting the startup process of the system.

The government also reported that electrical microsystems are being set up in various provinces, a strategy used in previous nationwide blackouts to gradually restore the supply.

At the moment, the stated priority is to ensure electricity supply to facilities deemed essential, while the rest of the country continues to wait for the restoration of service.

The total blackout occurred after a day already marked by significant power interruptions across the nation. According to official data from the Electric Union, the system had been operating for hours beforehand with a severe generation deficit, with availability far below actual demand.

The energy crisis that Cuba has been experiencing for years—characterized by aging thermoelectric plants, a lack of fuel, and constant breakdowns—had resulted in daily blackouts across much of the Island. However, the complete disconnection of the National Electricity System (SEN) brought the situation to an even more critical level, leaving the country completely in the dark.

Meanwhile, millions of Cubans on the Island are waiting for the recovery of the electrical system, with authorities still not providing a clear explanation of what caused one of the most severe blackouts in recent times.
