Cubans are sharing on social media alternatives to protect solar panels in light of the rise in thefts, amidst the energy crisis that has driven up the demand for these devices on the island.

In the Facebook group Cuba Usuarios · Energía Solar, a user named Yury Mp raised questions about the installation of metal structures around the panels and their potential impact on performance, accompanying his post with images of the setup.

The discussion generated multiple responses from users with practical experience.

Alejandro Vladimir León Borrego explained that this type of design is specifically in response to requests from clients concerned about theft, and he assured that the shade produced by the structure is minimal and does not significantly impact functionality.

It also provided maintenance recommendations, such as cleaning the panels with water and liquid detergent, avoiding powder products, and using a soft cloth to avoid damaging the surface.

Other users pointed out potential risks. Fe Esperanza warned that even small shadows on the edges can reduce efficiency, especially during low sun hours, because the cells operate in series.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of ventilation, as excessive heat can reduce the panel's efficiency.

According to what he explained, the panels can lose between 0.3% and 0.5% of efficiency for every additional degree of temperature, so he recommended maintaining spaces of at least five to ten centimeters to allow for air circulation.

For his part, Anier Medina shared his experience in installing metal reinforcements fitted to the panel frame without creating shadows, as an alternative to balance safety and efficiency.

The images show angular metal structures or profiles that partially enclose the panel and elevate it off the ground, a solution that, while not entirely eliminating the risks, reflects the ingenuity of Cubans in the face of insecurity and the limitations of the electrical system.
