The former Cuban relief pitcher Dorian Friol has passed away, as confirmed Enrique Díaz, his longtime teammate in provincial and national baseball, in statements shared by the sports outlet DPorto Sports.
"The former capital pitcher Dorian Friol has departed for eternity, who at one time was one of the most outstanding relievers in the National Series," reads the message posted on social media.
Friol was part of the Metropolitanos de La Habana, a team that emerged in the 1974-1975 season and disappeared around 2012, leaving a significant mark on baseball in the capital.
His passing adds to a period of significant losses for Cuban baseball, which in recent months has bid farewell to several beloved figures of the national sport.
Among them was the young pitcher for the Ciego de Ávila Tigers, who was only 24 years old, whose death shocked the fans.
The recent passing of Armando Capiró, an iconic figure of the Metropolitan and Industriales teams was also commemorated, along with the death of Pedro Arozarena Zayas at the age of 54, a former player who also made his mark in Cuban baseball.
