Johnny George Mays, aged 48 and a resident of Cutler Bay, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of a man who was gunned down on March 28 in front of his home in Hialeah.
According to the arrest report, the Hialeah Police responded that morning, at around 6:45 a.m., to the 600 block of West 15th Street after receiving a report of gunfire.
The agents found the victim lying in the vehicle entrance of her home with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been publicly disclosed.
Researchers found five shell casings at the scene and retrieved surveillance videos that captured the shooting in detail.
The images showed that the vehicle had been parked a block away for over an hour, waiting for the victim to leave his house.
When the victim emerged, the suspect approached in the vehicle, got out running with his arms in a shooting position, and shot her multiple times in the upper body with a 9 mm pistol, before returning to the vehicle and fleeing.
The investigators identified the vehicle used in the crime and spoke with its registered owner, who stated that the car had been in Mays' possession since late 2025. This allowed them to identify Mays as the one who fired the shots and to proceed with his arrest near his home in Cutler Bay.
Before being admitted to the Turner Guilford Knight jail last Saturday, Mays was temporarily hospitalized at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
The accused invoked his right to an attorney and did not speak with the investigators.
Mays also faces the charge of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a convicted felon, as a background check revealed that he has prior convictions for armed robbery and drug trafficking. This Monday, a judge ordered that he remain detained without the right to bail.
So far, the authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting. This case adds to a series of violent incidents reported in Hialeah during the early months of 2026, including the crime on March 12, when a Cuban man was shot dead in front of an apartment building in that same city.
