Three men of Cuban origin were arrested last Thursday after being allegedly caught committing acts of indecent exposure in broad daylight at Amelia Earhart Park, a public space in the city of Hialeah frequented by families and children, authorities reported.
The detainees were identified as Deibi Miguel Orpesa Martínez, 27 years old, residing in Hialeah and originally from the Mayabeque province in Cuba; Geriolsys Palenzuela Alcobre, 49 years old, residing in Miami and a nurse by profession; and Dienil Camejo, 61 years old, also residing in Miami, revealed media outlets.
According to the arrest report, the three individuals approached an undercover detective from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) separately in a wooded area of the park, exposed their genitals and engaged in acts of sexual self-stimulation.
Orpesa Martínez was the first to be detained at 11:14 in the morning; Camejo was arrested at 1:20 p.m. and Palenzuela five minutes later. The report states that about ten minutes after the first encounter with the agent, Orpesa Martínez was again found engaging in the same acts on a path in plain sight.
The wooded area where the events took place is used for the park's disc golf course, hiking, and other recreational activities open to the public. However, according to the arrest report from the MDSO, the area is known for "men exposing themselves, masturbating, and engaging in other sexual activities."
The Amelia Earhart Park, covering 515 acres, is a popular space for families with children. Its facilities include an interactive farm, a children's playground, a lake for water sports, cycling paths, and an 18-hole disc golf course.
The reaction among community members has been one of indignation and concern. "I feel outraged that there are still people doing these things, especially where there are many children and numerous women who come here to exercise and walk in the park. They should increase surveillance to ensure our safety," said a regular visitor to the park to Univision.
After their arrest on Thursday, the suspects were taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK), where they were held in custody.
The three face charges for exhibition of sexual organs, a misdemeanor that is processed under regulations related to lewd or indecent conduct, according to Florida law, which includes penalties ranging from fines and probation to even jail time in aggravated cases.
On Friday, they appeared in court, and a judge set bail at $500 for each of them.
