Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed law SB 628 this Wednesday, which designates 124 miles of State Road 80 in the southern part of the state as "President Donald J. Trump Highway", marking the largest state road renaming in honor of the president approved in Florida so far.

The stretch runs from State Road A1A in Palm Beach County to U.S. 41 in Lee County, crossing southern Florida from coast to coast.

The designation is honorary and does not change the official name of the road for administrative or navigation purposes, which will continue to be identified as State Road 80.

The Florida Department of Transportation will be responsible for installing signage with the new name along the corridor before the law goes into effect on July 1.

The SB 628 includes a total of 16 designations of roads and facilities in Florida, although DeSantis's signing event mainly focused on renaming the state capital's airport to "Bobby Bowden-Tallahassee International Airport," in honor of the legendary football coach of Florida State University.

State Representative Meg Weinberger (R-Palm Beach), who also led the effort to rename Palm Beach International Airport in honor of Trump, enthusiastically supported the change.

"I believe it is perfect, that it is absolutely deserved. President Trump has fought hard for our country and I am very grateful," Weinberger stated.

"I believe it is a great honor and he deserves it," he added, according to local press reports.

The new state law expands a series of tributes to Trump in Florida that began in July 2025, when the Palm Beach County commissioners voted 7-0 to ceremonially rename a four-mile stretch of Southern Boulevard -the route from the airport to Mar-a-Lago- as "President Donald J. Trump Boulevard."

In January 2026, Trump attended a dedication ceremony at Mar-a-Lago and described that renaming as "an incredible gesture."

Just weeks before the signing of SB 628, on March 30, DeSantis had already enacted law HB 919 to rename Palm Beach International Airport as "President Donald J. Trump International Airport", a change that is still pending approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The first attempt to rename a state road in honor of Trump occurred in 2021, when then-representative Anthony Sabatini proposed designating U.S. 27 as "President Donald J. Trump Highway," but the amendment did not gain the necessary support.

The SR-80 traverses communities such as Belle Glade, South Bay, and Clewiston, connecting agricultural areas with urban centers like Fort Myers, and is used daily by thousands of workers in the agricultural, construction, and service sectors in southern Florida.
