The organization Cubalex documented 229 protests in Cuba during March 2026, averaging seven daily and occurring in all provinces across the country, the highest number recorded in a single month since the massive protests on July 11, 2021.

According to the monthly report from the organization, published this Wednesday, protests increased more than threefold compared to the previous period, mainly driven by cacerolazos and public demonstrations concentrated in Havana over several consecutive weeks, although they also spread to the rest of the country.

"This figure represents the highest number of these expressions of discontent in a month following the massive protests of July 11, 2021," the report noted, which recalls that 584 protests were recorded just in July of that year and 3,300 throughout 2021.

The report also clarified that 346 repressive events were recorded, along with a radicalization in the demands.

Alongside the slogans related to the economic crisis, political slogans increasingly emerged, demanding a change of regime and system, such as "Freedom" or "Down with Communism."

Some messages even explicitly conveyed that the citizens' discontent went beyond material concerns, such as "We don't want light, we want freedom," directly contradicting the official narrative of the Cuban authorities.

The peak of this radicalization occurred in Morón, Ciego de Ávila, on the night of March 13, when protesters occupied the municipal headquarters of the Communist Party, set part of the furniture on fire, and raised the Cuban flag.

Throughout the month, the use of fire also became a recurring form of protest, especially through the burning of trash bins and the blocking of streets, highlighting an increase in the intensity and confrontational nature of the demonstrations, emphasizes Cubalex.

Currently, several protesters remain detained, including a minor.
