Dongfeng Cuba announced on Monday the construction of 11 new charging stations for electric vehicles distributed across the island, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation (MITRANS), with a key distinguishing feature: they will operate with their own photovoltaic systems and will not depend on the National Electric System.
The stations are currently under development and construction, as the company announced on its official blog, without specifying a concrete inauguration date.
"These stations will be supported by photovoltaic systems, meaning they will be able to generate their own energy and operate independently of the national electrical system," the company stated. The initiative is particularly significant in a context where 59% of the territory was left without electricity during the worst episodes of blackouts recorded in the country.
The proposal is part of the plans to install 40 solar charging stations that the Cuban government has been promoting in recent months, and it follows the trail of the first electric charging station in Sancti Spรญritus, inaugurated as a pilot project.
Cuba has made strides in its renewable energy infrastructure, reaching over 1,000 MW of installed photovoltaic capacity, and in February 2026, it recorded a simultaneous solar generation record exceeding 900 MW.
Dongfeng's commitment to electric mobility in Cuba is also supported by the 10% preferential tariffs for electric vehicles, a measure that has eased the entry of these types of cars into the Cuban market.
