A new sales record for the dollar in the informal Cuban market this Wednesday!

In recent hours, the dollar reached 530 CUP in the informal market of the island, which is four pesos more than the value recorded earlier on Tuesday.

The jump experienced by the U.S. dollar in recent hours represents one of the largest fluctuations recorded since February 20, reflecting an acceleration in the depreciation of the Cuban peso against the U.S. currency.

The rise of the US dollar has been sustained throughout the entire month of April.

Exchange Rate Evolution

During this period, the Cuban peso has accumulated a depreciation of 15 pesos (2.9%) against the dollar, which confirms the ongoing pressure on the informal market, as noted by the independent media outlet elTOQUE on April 22.

Another element that highlights the exchange rate tension is the increasing fragmentation of the market: dollar offers currently range from 480 to 560 CUP, a gap of up to 80 pesos that makes it difficult to establish a clear reference price between buyers and sellers.

The euro, for its part, remains valued at 600 CUP, a psychological barrier reached last Saturday April 19, marking a historic milestone for the informal value of the European currency in Cuba.

Although stable in recent days, the European currency has increased by 20 pesos (3.4%) since the end of March, indicating that the depreciation of the peso against the euro has been even more rapid than against the dollar.

In the market, the offers for the European currency range between 585 and 615 CUP.

Regarding the Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), it continues to be sold for the second consecutive day at 400 CUP, after trading at 395 CUP on Monday.

This behavior contrasts with the dynamism of the dollar and the euro: the MLC shows no variation so far this month, although in practice the market displays a price spread between 375 and 450 CUP, a difference of up to 75 pesos.

The Currencies and Finance Observatory (OMfi) of Cuba projected for the end of April that the dollar would reach 533 CUP, with a fluctuation range between 503 and 590 CUP, indicating that the upward trend is still ongoing.

Among the secondary currencies, the Canadian dollar also shows a significant rise, trading at 350 CUP after increasing by 7.5 pesos during the day. So far in April, it has accumulated a rise of 10 pesos, with offers fluctuating between 330 and 373 CUP.
