The Cold Case Homicide Unit of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BSO) identified a person of interest in the crime of Bree Black, a transgender woman aged 27 who was shot to death on July 3, 2020 in Pompano Beach, Florida.

The announcement came almost six years after the event, during a press conference in which Detective Andrew Gianino from the Cold Case Unit provided new details about what happened that night.

Gianino recalled that Black had attended a baby gender reveal party, stepped away to charge his phone, and then left his apartment to wait for his ride.

At that moment, she was on a video call with a friend. After the call ended, she was chased, shot, and killed.

The person of interest is currently incarcerated in a Florida prison, was arrested for another offense but it has come to light that they had an altercation with the victim days before the crime, and that this altercation is believed to have sparked the tragic outcome.

Authorities pointed out that there were many people around when the crime occurred, and investigators continue to seek the cooperation of potential witnesses.

The case of Black is part of a worrying trend of violence against the transgender community in the United States.

In 2020, civil rights organizations documented that at least 21 transgender or gender non-conforming individuals were victims of homicide that year in the country.
