A 26-year-old homeless Cuban man working at Walmart was arrested in Miami-Dade after confessing to the police that he was committing fraud inside the store to afford a motel for the night.

The arrested individual, identified as Lázaro Miranda Alonso, was employed at the Walmart Supercenter located in Doral. According to the police report, which Local 10 obtained, the employee himself took advantage of his access to the cash register to carry out fraudulent refunds without an actual purchase being behind them.

Authorities pointed out that security cameras captured the young man processing refunds without customers present and without receiving merchandise. To carry out the fraud, he used receipts from other buyers to load money onto gift cards or kept the cash.

According to the report, the total amount stolen amounts to $857.46.

The arrest took place on Monday night inside the supermarket, and he was subsequently transferred to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he was admitted later that same day.

Miranda Alonso faces seven charges, including organized fraud and third-degree grand theft, along with multiple accusations for using false receipts to request refunds. The bail was set at $5,500.
