A video published this Friday on Instagram shows the fight between a Cuban and a towing company operator in the Miami/Homestead, Florida area, which went viral within a few hours.
The clip, lasting two minutes and four seconds, was uploaded by the account @miamiirepo with the caption: "Who taught Grandpa to box like that?", indicating that the elderly man tried to hit the tow truck driver during the altercation.
The tow truck driver was about to remove the Cuban's vehicle from the road for being improperly parked when the owner showed up and refused to pay to prevent the car from being towed. This was what sparked the fight.
According to comments on social media, the Cuban allegedly employed a classic distraction tactic to strike the crane. "The grandpa did the 'look over there'... Take that!" wrote a user.
In the recording, witnesses can be heard repeating: "You're going to jail. You're going to jail. You're going to jail.", anticipating potential legal consequences for the Cuban due to his violent behavior.
Comments on social media reflect divided opinions about the incident. Some users defend the elderly man and criticize the practices of the tow truck operators. "I hate these things but for me, the tow truck drivers are very bad," wrote one person.
Others, in contrast, point out that the elderly man acted improperly. "The old man was wrong... he did it the wrong way."
One internet user was more straightforward: "He should go to jail. Many elderly people feel entitled to everything and act physically, thinking that their age will let them get away with it."
A commentator suggested that the reason for the towing might have been an unpaid debt: "Pay your bills," he wrote.
This type of confrontation is not new within the Cuban community in South Florida. In January 2024, a couple of Cubans had a similar altercation with a tow truck driver who attempted to tow their vehicle while they were inside, a video that also generated significant buzz on social media.
Since July 2024, Florida has strengthened laws protecting vehicle owners against towing: operators are required to cease the operation and return the vehicle if the owner shows up during the towing, charging only a partial fee.
Owners can also deposit a bond of up to $1,500 to recover their vehicle while legally contesting the towing, without having to pay the full amount claimed.
However, physical resistance or aggression towards the operator may result in criminal charges for assault, regardless of whether the towing was legal or not, which could complicate the legal situation of the Cuban man captured in the video.
