The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, reacted this Sunday to the shooting that occurred on Saturday night during the Annual White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington D.C., expressing relief for the safety of President Donald Trump and condemning the violence.
"It's great to hear that President Trump and his wife are doing well after the recent events. We send them our respect. Violence should never be the answer," wrote Sheinbaum on her X account.
The incident occurred on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton when a 30-year-old man from California opened fire near the main control area with metal detectors for the event, around 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and several cabinet members were promptly evacuated by the Secret Service, with all of them remaining unharmed.
Among the evacuated officials were Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and advisor Stephen Miller.
A Secret Service agent was injured after being shot in his protective gear and was taken to a local hospital, where he is expected to survive, according to three sources cited by CNN.
The spokesperson for the Secret Service, Anthony Guglielmi, officially confirmed that "the president and the first lady are safe along with all those protected," and noted that the investigation is being coordinated with the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington.
The suspect was apprehended at the scene of the incident.
Trump reacted on his social media platform Truth Social, praising the performance of the Secret Service and law enforcement, confirming the capture of the shooter and announcing a press conference at the White House.
"A rather intense night in D.C. The Secret Service and law enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted with speed and bravery. The shooter has been apprehended," the president wrote.
Trump also announced that the dinner, which was attended by approximately 2,600 people, would be rescheduled within 30 days.
It was the first time Trump attended the White House Correspondents' Dinner as an incumbent president, marking an unprecedented event in the history of this traditional gathering of journalists, political figures, and celebrities.
Sheinbaum's message comes in the context of a complex bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States, characterized by tensions regarding security and sovereignty, although the Mexican president has consistently maintained a diplomatic tone of non-confrontation with Washington throughout 2026.
Just days before the shooting, Trump publicly criticized Sheinbaum for her reaction to the death of two CIA agents in Chihuahua, accusing her of lacking "sympathy" towards the United States.
