The actress and presenter Miriam Socarrás turned 85 this past Saturday and celebrated surrounded by friends, colleagues, and loved ones in a gathering that was captured on social media as a heartfelt tribute to one of the most beloved figures in Cuban culture.
The renowned film and theater critic Frank Padrón Nodarse shared on Facebook photographs from the celebration with the message: "Celebrating the splendid 85 years of Miriam Socarrás."
The images show the actress at the Cafetales restaurant in Havana, surrounded by a group of people in a festive and relaxed atmosphere, among whom are also recognized actresses Paula Alí and Diana Rosa Suárez, broadcaster Idania Martínez Grandales, and Frank Padrón himself.
Born on April 25, 1941, in Havana, Socarrás began her journey in the performing arts around 1959, when she left her job as a typist to take up amateur theater under the direction of Elio Mesa at the Las Máscaras theater in El Vedado.
She was discovered by the Mexican acting professor Rodolfo Valencia in 1961, and the following year she joined the cast of the Musical Theater of Havana, where she received comprehensive training in singing, ballet, dance, voice, diction, pantomime, and Cuban folklore.
Her career in film turned her into what many call the "Empress of Supporting Roles in Cuban Cinema," with a filmography of over 20 films from ICAIC, including titles such as "A Day in November" (1972), "Cecilia" (1981), "Plaff" (1989), "Supporting Roles" (1989), "María Antonia" (1990), "Queen and King" (1994), "Sapphires, Blue Madness" (1997), and "Habanastation" (2010).
For 16 years, from 1981 to 1995, she served as a presenter at the Cabaret Tropicana in Havana, replacing model Alicia Figueroa, and she undertook international tours to the former Soviet Union and Spain, where she also worked as a television presenter.
On television, he hosted the program "Siete Días" in the 1980s and participated in numerous shows on Cuban television. He is also remembered for his role in the telenovela "Destino prohibido," from 2000.
In November 2021, she joined as the host of the television magazine Ruta 10 on Cubavisión.
In January of this year, Socarrás attended the tribute for the 90th birthday of actress Paula Alí in Cuba, a testament to his ongoing connection with his colleagues on the Island.
She is a member of UNEAC and the Association of Writers and Artists of Cuba, and her career has been the subject of extensive profiles in specialized media that document her journey through theater, film, and television over more than six decades.
